Selling this bike was never the plan, but I’ve come to accept that the realities of my life right now mean that building and riding this bike isn’t part of my immediate future, and as such I should at least consider handing this off to someone who can enjoy it for the incredible machine that it is.
But first, some history: This Allez frameset is one of 74 frames that was created to celebrate 40th anniversary of Specialized’s founding in 1974 . Mark DiNucci (the legendary designer of the OG Allez) was commissioned to create a custom Reynolds 853 tube and lug set for the bike. Each one was painted ‘fire truck red’ and the entire run of 74 frames was auctioned off on eBay with proceeds going to World Bicycle Relief. I recall seeing the announcement in 2014 and being fascinated by the bike, but was in no position to drop the $4000 USD on a frame.
Then, I had the opportunity to pick up this frame (#69) during COVID from the owner of a bike shop that had received the frame from Mike Sinyard himself. I was captivated by the beauty of this frame and how it marries traditional design and construction techniques with modern standards and geometry, and set out to build this up as the perfect Sunday driver and an homage to classic road bikes.
Sizing – the frame proportions are generally consistent with a 58cm frame, and would appear to generally accommodate most 6” riders (give or take). More detailed measurements to come.
The bike comes in it’s own custom box, and includes a leather-covered S-Works Toupe saddle, a lightweight cycling hat, and wool cycling hat, a wool Specialized sweater, and a Specialized water bottle. For transparency it should be mentioned that the frameset would have originally included a certificate of authenticity, leather bar tape and cork bar ends, and a saddle bag. These items were unfortunately misplaced by the original owner, and are not included as part of the sale.
A few highlights of my planned build list:
Specialized Allez 40th Anniversary edition frameset
Chris King headset and bottom bracket (both silver)
S-Works handlebar, stem, and seat post (all custom painted in silver by Ron at ProBikeDesign)
Roval CLX 32 wheel set shod with Turbo Cotton tires
SRAM Red 22 groupset (in the original 2013 graphics)
It is (in my humble estimation) the perfect build. Realizing that this is highly subjective assessment, I would be willing to consider selling it in one of the combinations set out below:
Frame module ($4700 CAD)
This includes:
The frameset (and everything in the original box)
Chris King bottom bracket + headset
Painted S-Works handlebar, stem, and seat post
Specialized S-Wrap Classic handlebar tape
Assorted frame parts (bb cable guide, barrel adjuster, bottle cage bolts etc)
Rolling module ($6300 CAD)
This includes everything in the frame module, plus:
Roval CLX 32 wheel set
Turbo Cotton tires w/ Aerothan TPU tubes
Everything except for wheels ($6600 CAD)
This includes everything from the frame module plus the SRAM Red 22 groupset, including:
Red 22 shifters
Red 22 brake calipers
Swissstop Black Prince EVO brake pads
SRAM shift and brake housing
Red 22 Rear derailleur (short cage)
Red 22 Front derailleur
Red 22 crankset (GXP, 275mm, 53/39)
Red 22 cassette (11-28)
Red 22 chain
The whole kaboodle ($8200 CAD)
This includes everything in the rolling module, plus:
SRAM Red 22 groupset as above.
Condition notes
The frame itself is in immaculate condition and has never been built up or ridden. However there are some very minor indications that wheels have been mounted. The wool accessories in the box have similarly have never been worn, however feature some minor degradation (perhaps due to a moth?). The new silver Chris King headset is already installed and will be sold as such.
The painted S-Works finishing kit were take-off parts and have never been installed since getting paint.
The Roval CLX 32 wheels, Turbo Cotton tires, and Red 22 cassette have seen 2-3 rides, but essentially present as new.
The SRAM crank arms are the only part of the groupset that have seen previous use, though you would be hard pressed to tell.
For what it’s worth, I’m happy to ship the bike within North America, though this would likely need 2 separate shipments (frame box + parts box). For a local buyer I would be happy to assist with the build were that to be required.
